The Screening Program for Colorectal Cancer (SPCRC) is a new population-based screening program for the detection of colorectal cancer. The program is coordinated by the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency in partnership with the Health Regions and funded by the Ministry of Health. The SPCRC will be phased-in across Saskatchewan over four years beginning in 2009. In the first phase, men and women between the ages of 50 and 74 in the Five Hills Health Region will be invited to participate.

Early Detection Saves Lives
One in 14 men and one in 16 women in Canada will develop colorectal cancer during their lifetime. In Saskatchewan, colorectal cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Getting older is one of the greatest risk factors for developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is over 90 per cent preventable. Early detection through screening and follow-up diagnostic tests can result in the removal of both precancerous polyps and cancer, reducing the number of new cases and deaths from colorectal cancer. |
